Castle and Knight (2005) By: Fleur Star

This non-fiction book is all about real castles and brave knights through the ages and around the world. It includes a glossary of terms as well as exciting facts and photographs on each page. This book is easy to follow and even features a section about castles today. As a reader, I really enjoyed the glimpse inside the setting and culture of many popular and well-known fairy tales and stories we read today. Plus, this book covers details about traditional dress, food, battle, entertainment, customs and more from this exciting world. As a teacher, this book could be used during a history lesson about castles through the ages or medieval life.

Wemberly Worried (2000) By: Kevin Henkes - I heard about this book during a reader’s theater performance and I want to read it because it features a shy mouse that worries about everything, including the first day of school.
The Little Prince (2010) By: Joann Sfar - I heard about this book during the genre presentation on graphic novels and I want to read it because it’s a fable about a prince’s travels to different planets in the universe and his encounters with foolish men who teach him lessons along the way.
Rhymes Round the World (2009) By: Kay Chorao - I heard about this book during the genre presentation on poetry and I want to read it because it includes popular rhymes and poems from different cultures and illustrations to go along with each selection.
Thea’s Tree (2008) By: Allison Jackson – I heard about this book during the genre presentation on fantasy and science fiction and I want to read it because it’s another version of Jack and the Beanstalk with a girl named Thea who enjoys science experiments, including a tree that can’t stop growing.
Rainstorm (2007) By: Barbara Lehman – I heard about this book during the genre presentation on wordless picture books and I want to read it because it takes readers on an adventure with a little boy who must occupy himself on a rainy day.
My Brother Charlie (2010) By: Holly Robinson Peete & Ryan Elizabeth Peete – I heard about this book during the genre presentation on realistic fiction and I want to read it because it’s a story about the unique relationship between an autistic brother and his twin sister.
Alphabet City By: Stephen T. Johnson - I heard about this wordless book in class and want to read it because it features everyday objects that create the letters of the alphabet.
The Napping House By: Audrey Wood - I heard about this book during our author/illustrator presentations and want to read it because it has beautiful colors and drawings and is an example of a cumulative story.
One Green Apple By: Eve Bunting - I heard about this book during our author/illustrator presentations and it’s about a young Muslim immigrant who is the new kid in school and learning to adjust.
Home of the Brave By: Allen Say – I heard about this book during our author/illustrator presentations and I was really intrigued by the beautiful and realistic illustrations about a man confronting the trauma of his family’s incarceration in the Japanese internment camps during World War II.
Voices in the Park By: Anthony Browne - I heard about this book during our author/illustrator presentations and I want to read it because it features four people who go to the park and each of their perspectives about what happens there.
